ESR Japan receives award for social and environmental contribution

British Chamber of Commerce in Japan recognises ESR’s innovations and commitment to workplace enhancement and female workforce participation

TOKYO/HONG KONG, 8 November 2018 – ESR, a leading Asia-Pacific logistics real estate and fund management platform, is delighted to announce that ESR Japan is the recipient of the Social and Environmental Contribution award from the 2018 British Business Awards. ESR Japan was recognised for its commitment to enhancing the workplace environment and encouraging women to re-enter the workforce.

For more than a decade, the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ) has hosted the British Business Awards to recognise leading corporations that have made remarkable contributions to the community and demonstrated excellence in innovation and entrepreneurship.

“In addition to responding to the traditional demands of our logistics clients, we have another important priority: acting as a bridge between the local society and the environment. In recent years, we have centred our initiatives around addressing some of Japan’s most pressing issues, including a shortage of labour, job opportunities for talented mothers, and nursery space,” said Stuart Gibson, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of ESR. “In identifying these key problems, we have sought to bring mothers keen to participate in the labour markets back into the workplace, as well as make positive environmental and social contributions which benefit the local Japanese community and economy.”

A pioneer in identifying opportunities that enhance sustainability and community development, ESR has transformed its warehouse space through the implementation of an innovative human-centric design. The Barnklubb, a day-care centre offering free childcare for hundreds of children, was created to attract female employees and ease their burden of balancing parenting with working outside the home. The KLUBBLOUNGE, a private lounge with complimentary TV and WiFi, as well as a retail shop, provides employees with a space to relax and take a break. Meanwhile, ESR’s distribution centres have installed rooftop solar power plants to produce clean energy, in one of Japan’s largest rooftop initiatives to promote sustainability.

Emma Larsson, ESG Officer of ESR, said “ESR’s holistic, human-centric approach not only focuses on environmental risks but also on making a meaningful impact on society and on the health and well-being of our tenants. We are honoured and privileged to receive this award in Japan and we will continue to seek ways to raise the bar in our ESG initiatives across the geographies in which we operate.”

“This honour goes to all of our employees around the region for creating a culture where our people can thrive in a supportive and healthy setting. We look forward to working with local communities in Japan and regionally to introduce other innovative programmes, which act as catalysts for positive change,” remarked Gibson.

The recognition reflects ESR’s pursuit of environment, social, and governance (ESG) excellence. The company’s development, Nanko Distribution Centre 2, was the first logistics facility to obtain ABINC (Association for Business Innovation in harmony with Nature and Community) certification in Japan.  Various ESR projects in Japan, Mainland China and South Korea have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification.  In addition, ESR’s South Korea platform was ranked first in the categories for Developer, East Asia, non-listed; East Asia, developer; and Asia, developer, by GRESB, a leading global ESG benchmark for real assets.
